Bachelor of Fine Arts first grade spring exhibition 2020
Where You Stand is the title of a collaborative spring exhibition between HDK-Valand and Gislaveds konsthall. Sixteen BFA 1 students explored different approaches to engage and respond to the town’s social and cultural histories and communities.
As part of the collaboration with Gislaveds konsthall the students visited the town and proposed individual art projects for a group exhibition at a former rubber factory. Due to Covid-19 the physical group exhibition
was canceled.
In consequence the publication became the students’ main focus as a means of introducing their artwork, and provide critical reflection on their work.
This publication seeks to address the question of the social role of the artist and to provide a timely consideration of the challenge for artists working in the public realm during a time of social distancing. The publication and parallel online presentations work on several levels. As a guide to and discussion of the work but also the place, Gislaved and its surroundings.
We hope that between the printed and online material readers will be able to engage with the work of the students and be a part of an exploration of Gislaved. Alongside the presentations of work we have attempted to create a context. Images of the intended exhibition space providing scale and proportion. Lina Ekdahl provides a poetic experience of the place. Nils Svensk gives a tentative context to the presented work, and Magnus Haglund digs into the exhibitions point of departure.
The art work and other contributions that make up this publication or exhibition come together as a whole. We hope that it is greater than the sum of its parts.
Där du står är titeln på en vårutställning producerad i samarbete mellan HDK-Valand och Gislaveds konsthall. Sexton BFA-förstaårsstudenter har utforskat olika angreppssätt för att aktivera och respondera på ortens
sociala och kulturella historier och sammanhang.
Som en del av samarbetet med Gislaveds konsthall har studenterna besökt samhället och framlagt individuella konstprojekt ämnade för en gemensam utställning i den före detta gummifabriken. På grund av covid-19 har den fysiska grupputställningen ställts in.
Som en följd av detta har publikationen blivit studenternas huvudfokus för presentationen av deras verk och kritisk reflektion kring dem.
Denna publikation försöker att bemöta frågan om konstnärens sociala roll och erbjuder en påpasslig eftertanke kring de utmaningar konstnärer som verkar i det offentliga ställs inför i en tid av social distansering. Publikationen och de parallella presentationerna online verkar på flera nivåer. Som en guide till och diskussion om verken men också platsen, Gislaved och dess omgivningar.
Vi hoppas att läsaren, genom kombinationen av tryckta och digitala material kommer att kunna möta studenternas verk och vara del av ett utforskande av Gislaved. Vid sidan av de presenterade verken har vi försökt att skapa ett sammanhang. Bilder av den tilltänkta utställningsplatsen anger skala och proportioner. Lina Ekdahl ger oss en poetisk upplevelse av platsen. Nils Svensk tillhandahåller en prövande kontextualisering av de presenterade verken och Magnus Haglund gräver djupare i utställningens utgångspunkter.
Konstverken och de andra bidrag som tillsammans ingår i denna publikation eller utställning sammanförs till en helhet. Vi hoppas att den är större än summan av sina delar.
